Where Sustainability Meets Grab-n-Go Packaging – Is It Possible?

As the media continues to focus on the plastic waste that’s generated from ready-to-eat meals, snacks, and serviceware included with easily consumed carry out meals.  While the demand for easily consumed grab-and-go convenience food grows, so does the global focus on microplastics in the oceans and waterways and plastic packaging in supermarkets.  Plastic straws, bags, and bottles are being banned in cities around the globe and the marine plastics organizations are ramping up their education on issues around disposable plastics in the oceans and waterways.

Is it possible to deliver sustainable packaging that will keep consumers coming back for more? We thought a show-and-tell spread highlighting a few favorite new sustainable packaging examples would help to inspire to #reduceyourforkprint in 2018 and beyond.

“It is an exciting time to be a part of the foodservice packaging industry with so much focus being placed on improving recyclability and reducing waste.”

Plastic-Free Pledge Earns UK Retailer Big Green Credentials

UK supermarket retailer Iceland Food’s recent commitment to more plastic-free aisles and the rollout of new paper-based packaging is turning heads. Iceland’s ready-made store brands “Mumbai Street Co” and children’s meals brand “Hungry Heroes” will now be available in new environmentally friendly packaging beginning in March this year. This is big news considering the leading UK grocery retailers generate 800,000+ tons of waste from plastic food packaging annually.

“There is great awareness now of how much damage we are doing to the world with our use of plastic. At Iceland we are passionate about environmental matters, sustainability and helping to effect change.”

– Ron Metcalfe, Managing Director of Iceland Ireland

Iceland’s new cardboard trays will now replace the black plastic trays typically used for microwavable meals and are high carbon to produce. The paper and pulp trays are recyclable through domestic waste collections or in-store recycling facilities.

“The world has woken up to the scourge of plastics. A truckload is entering our oceans every minute, causing untold damage to our marine environment and ultimately humanity – since we all depend on the oceans for our survival.”

– Richard Walker, Iceland Managing Director

According to The UK Guardian, “Iceland also said its research found that 80% of shoppers would endorse a supermarket’s move to go plastic free.” In addition to addressing plastic packaging in their stores, Iceland Foods has announced a switch from single-use plastic straws to environmentally friendly compostable straws by September 2018.

Glass Is Back – with New OuiTM By Yoplait Yogurt Pots                                                  – Sustainable and cute with so many ways to reuse them

We’re not sure how many of the adorable 5 oz. glass yogurt “pots” from the new OuiTM By Yoplait line of yogurt ever make it to the recycling station since they’ve become a hot eco-friendly container with many reuses. These definitely aren’t your grandmother’s old canning jam jars. General Mills launched OuiTM by Yoplait, launched in July 2017, is marketed as an artisanal dairy product made and sold in French-glass pots and sold in US stores.

Glass yogurt containers are more common in Europe but new yogurt pots from Yoplait have received a warm welcome across the pond. Glass jars enable a thicker and creamier “French-style” yogurt which is actually cultured in the pots of yogurt. Glass pots contain no chemicals that can leach into food or break down into tiny micro-plastic particles. There’s so much to love about sustainable glass jars for dairy products, including the fact that recycled glass uses 40% less energy then manufactured new glass. According to Packaging World, OuiTM by Yoplait is packaged in US in clear, 5-oz custom-shaped glass which were developed specifically for Yoplait Saveur d’Autrefois. The yogurt pots are covered with a foil laminate lidding material and features a front label with scalloped edges that suggests a homemade feel.

“The rigidity of the glass helps maintain the yogurt’s integrity and enables the yogurt to stabilize without the use of added cornstarch or gelatin.”

There’s almost a cult-like love for these handy little French-glass jars from Oui Yogurt and blogs are full of ways to repurpose them, including as storage contains, and there’s even an Etsy seller who’s crated a 2-pack reusable lid for the Oui yogurt pot cult.
